With this approach we are dealing with the presenting symptoms, often substituting a Positive symptom or thought to replace a Negative symptom or thought. Change: I feel sad , as if I’m losing something important when I give up smoking. (The negatives in this situation are, sadness, loss, giving up) To: I am proud of myself and feel free from the contamination, now that I have become a non-smoker. (The positives are: proud, free, become a non-smoker.) Change: I feel nervous at speaking in public (The negative is: nervous.) To: I am excited at having this opportunity to share my knowledge and opinions with others, who will benefit as a result. (The positives are: excited, opportunity, share, benefit .) With this approach we acknowledge that something is causing the symptoms i.e., the negative thought but we are not addressing the cause of that thought. Smoking causes illness and premature death, why would anyone mourn the secession of such a vile habit (I used to smoke 60+, cigarettes per day I am allowed to call it a vile habit). Speaking in public. Why should this cause a well prepared and motivated person to, at it’s most extreme, be physically sick or have to leave a job. Suggestion is an extremely successful form of therapy For further information see FAQ
